I've been using iTunes for years and had no problems with the previous version. The installation hangs 75% of the way through each attempt, with the message 'Service 'Apple Mobile Device Service' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services'. I then get 3 options of abort, retry and ignore.
